LUMINA
(1) the measure of the perceived power of light (physics)
(2) a passage in a tubular organ (anatomy)
(3) a cavity within a plant enclosed by cell walls (botany)
My work involving hand extruded instant film captures the collision of light, chemicals, film, and physical manipulation. As I worked on these images, zooming further and further in to clean up the scans, whole worlds emerged in the details of the chemicals and traces of hand manipulation. Bringing up the shadows revealed bold, colorful galaxies of light, or organic shapes reminiscent of cells on a glass slide seen under a microscope. The term LUMINA, with its three-fold definitions, seemed to be the perfect fit to title this series.
